You are invited to attend the meetings at no cost. If you should decide to become
a member the dues are $15.00 per year. Membership entitles you access to the monthly
newsletter “Drive Light” 30 days in advance to being posted on the site for the general
public, a free email address and members only raffle tickets for prizes at our annual
Christmas party and raffle.

Highlights from Previous Meetings
01-04-12 - The main presentation was an introduction to Thunderbird, a free email
client that can be used with most providers. Our presentation included setup and
usage tips through a live demonstration. This was followed by an open forum discussion
on Windows 7 tips and question answers and concerns. Also discussed was how to make
passwords that are more secure and tips to make yours easier to keep track of.
12-07-11 - Holiday Cheer - The December 7th meeting was our Holiday Party, Drawings
and auction. Greg Wauson started off the festivities with a Magic Show. Members brought
their no longer needed Software and Hardware for the Auction and brought their favorite
finger food or dish for the Pot Luck. The Group provided utensils, plates and soft
drinks. It was a very fun and relaxing evening for all.
11-02-11 - October was National Cyber Security Awareness Month; we shared tips on
how to stay safe when banking online? The holiday shopping season is almost here
- we discussed what is hot in technology and how to get the best deals on your holiday
gifts. Do you ever need to share a projector or monitor with two computers? We demonstrated
an easy way using a KVM switch.
10-05-11 - The countywide blackout last month left most people feeling helpless.
We discussed our experiences and offered tips to prepare you for the next power outage.
There was also be a demonstration of a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) and a
backup program for protecting your computer's data.
09-07-11 - Topics: Are You Game?; Computer Freebies; Happy Anniversary, IBM PC!
Summary: Do you play computer games? From online role playing to shoot 'em up, Farmville
and Angry Birds, we will have a discussion of the latest computer and tech games,
and find out what people are playing. If the economic meltdown has you looking for
ways to save, our discussion of useful computer software that is available for free
will help you do more for less. We will also have a brief computer history lesson
to commemorate last month's 30th anniversary of the introduction of the IBM PC.
08-03-11 - More megapixels means larger and larger photo files to share with family
and friends. Join us to find out ways to more easily share those large files with
others. Want to share a keyboard and mouse between two or more computers, but don't
have a KVM switch? We will demonstrate how with free Synergy software, with only
a network connection required. Need to make calls to U.S. phones, but only have an
Internet-connected computer? We will show you how Gmail can let you call any U.S.
phone for free.
07-06-11 - A Review of the Happenings at SWCC - Join us to review what we learned,
saw and won at the Southwest Computer Conference in June. We'll give you the highlights
and pass on links to more. Saving Money With Your Computer - Greeting Cards- Want
to use your computer to save money? Make your own greeting cards and never have to
travel to the card store again. We'll show you how. There will also be a demonstration
of a fast film scanner for slides and negatives, and we'll show you a device that
rips music from CDs without a computer.
06-1-11 - The Under the Computer Hood User's Group Inc hosted our annual summer
picnic at Crown Point in Mission Bay. Pizza, drinks and paper plates were provided
by the club. Members brought chips, dips, brownies and other assorted goodies.
05-04-11 - Learning Opportunities in Computers - The SWCC; Technology's Impact on
our Everyday Lives, Part 1. The Southwest Computer Conference will be held in San
Diego June 3-5; we discussed what it has to offer and why you should attend. Technology
affects our lives in many ways we don't realize and with many unintended consequences.
There was a group discussion on the impact it has on us every day, and what we can
look forward to.
04-06-11 - UCHUG held a group participation discussion on the advantages and pitfalls
of using tax preparation software to file your tax returns. We also had a discussion
on some of the alternative operating systems available today. There's more out there
than Microsoft, Apple and Red Hat products. We will also provide tips for complete
computer maintenance.
03-02-11 - We hosted a panel discussion on online banking with emphasis on dealing
with your finances over the Internet and provided information on the advantages,
risks and security precautions to take with online accounts. The members shared tips
on safeguarding your financial information online and on your computer.
02-02-11 - We discussed how Ethernet over powerline works and demonstrated the Netgear
XAV101. There was also a discussion about System Restore. Your Windows computer is
probably already storing restore points; we discussed how they can be used to restore
your computer's system files to an earlier point in time and undo an installation
or correct problems.
01-05-11 - Our secretary described how he maintained email and Internet connectivity
while traveling the roads of Alaska this last year. We will also had a brief update
on USB 3.0 and other short presentations on topics of interest.
